Published: February 25, 2021 In: Remote Hiring

Recruitment, as we know it, has radically changed over the past couple of years. The pandemic further hastened the industry to adopt remote methods of working and recruiting. Without enough knowledge on how to navigate the situation quickly, companies became eager to maintain business continuity while embracing remote recruitment.

That’s why Talview released the Global Remote Hiring Trends survey in December 2020 to explore the key recruitment trends that talent leaders and recruiting teams expect to see in 2021. It was a worldwide survey to understand the latest trends in recruitment and the technology gaps that globally and culturally aware enterprises need in order to build effective remote recruitment processes for the future.

Recent Trends in Recruitment

Fully Remote Hiring Process

One of the striking revelations of the Remote Hiring Trends Report was that 80% of the respondents have shifted to remote methods for their interviewing and hiring process. What the industry has been trying to do for a while now was suddenly accelerated due to the pandemic.

The respondents said that they have completely moved their pre-screening round or their final interview round online. Some said that they have started hosting events online.

“Exploring and implementing new tools and techniques for better candidate experience and virtual onboarding process, and continuous communication.” - Survey respondent

They all shared the feeling that remote recruitment makes the process more flexible, accessible, and saves time. Candidates do not have to live in the same area or even city as that of their employer.

Tech positions ranked as the most popular among the respondents to hire remotely, followed by Management, Sales and Marketing, Operations and Finance, and Customer Success.

One company representative expressed that they have been able to do away with background checks or drug screening with the help of remote hiring. Others still faced legal challenges such as needing wet signatures as a mandate for employment in certain countries.

“We have more positions that can be 100% remote. We are expanding our sourcing across the U.S. and other countries. We are also asking our hiring managers to consider a wider reach.” - Survey respondent

Do Away with Geographical Barriers

Coming back to remote hiring, 38% respondents said that one of the biggest obstacles to hiring beyond local regions is the organizational mentality that in-person teams perform better than remote teams. When they were asked if they think they could find better talent if not limited to candidates who lived within commuting distance of their offices, 79% respondents agreed.

“It might be but distance is not the case. It helps to attract more candidates and gives us the opportunity to get the potential one.” - PT Nestle, Indonesia

Improve Diversity with Remote Hiring

The survey also explored the themes of diversity and inclusion in recruitment. 79% of respondents conveyed that remote hiring could help improve diversity in their organizations.

Emphasis on Candidate and Recruiter Experience

Talking about candidate & recruiter experiences, the survey confirmed that there is an increased focus on improving candidate experience in recruitment this year onwards.

When asked how they were doing so, one respondent said that they launched many initiatives facilitating virtual candidate engagement in their organization. Another commented that their organization switched from face-to-face interviews, onboarding, and follow-up meetings to online video interviews.

“We make the candidate experience as digitally fluid as possible - we have relaunched our Work from Home site and improved the process of Initial system assessment for the candidates.” - Survey respondent

When asked how satisfied the respondents were on a scale of 1-10 with remote work, 71% respondents agreed that they were fully satisfied and voted for 8 or above with 37% voting for 10.
